Minecraft's available on everything from smartphones and tablets to computers and consoles. It's even set to go next-gen on Sony's PlayStation 4. With its own line of merchandise and very own convention, there's hardly a soul alive who hasn't heard of the game. But you know a game's made it big when it's featured on Comedy Central's "South Park."
Not unlike when World of Warcraft, the MMORPG that set the standard for the genre, was once featured, so too is Mojang's literal sandbox building game as the subject of tonight's episode, but we don't quite know in what capacity. "To keep their parents from hurting each other, the boys use the game 'Minecraft' to distract them," is all that's offered from the official description of the episode titled, "Informative Murder Porn." Going by the title, expect some kind of knock at the folks who keep pointing the finger, blaming video games for violent actions. And nothing dispels that argument quicker by showing that one of the most popular games out there just so happens to come up short on violence. That's my guess at least.
Whatever the case may be, the episode's is already receiving support, Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson tweeting, "I love South Park more than I love my own skin. And I have pretty awesome skin."
In other South Park related gaming news, we recently found out that South Park: The Stick of Truth hits PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America on Dec. 10, and in Europe on Dec. 12. Fans who pre-order the game get the Ultimate Fellowship Pack, which lets players choose their classes and pick their perks with four exclusive costumes that come equipped with special abilities.
Written and voiced by series-creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, The Stick of Truth is said to provide the "definitive South Park experience." The game will sees players take up the role of the "New Kid," who teams up with South Park locals to save the world.
"Succeed, and you shall be South Park's savior, cementing your social status in South Park Elementary. Fail, and you will forever be known... as a loser."
The episode premieres tonight, 10 PM EST. In case you forgot to pay your cable bill, you can watch the full episode here tomorrow, and check out a brief teaser below.
