Growing Popularity of Lightsaber Duelling

The Jedi Knight Academy offers fencing lessons using lightsabers, modeled after the teachings of the Jedi from the famous films by George Lucas. The academy provides a fun and safe environment for participants to engage in this playful sport. Mauricio Rodriguez, an 18-year-old student, shared that the training is both enjoyable and secure.

Both men and women, some dressed in masks and long capes, join these sessions, driven by their love for science fiction and the opportunity to exercise. Victor Aceves, a 24-year-old engineering student, said that fencing with a lightsaber makes him feel like a Jedi and adds an exciting twist to the sport.

Training and Future Prospects

Students at the academy advance through different levels, from "padawan" to "knight," "grand knight," and "master." Marisol Rodriguez, a 33-year-old participant, mentioned she joined because it was an engaging way to stay active.

The Jedi Knight Academy has expanded to several states in Mexico and plans to host a national lightsaber dueling tournament on July 21, open to all enthusiasts from padawans to Jedi masters. Ulises Vazquez, one of the academy's founders, expressed his desire to gain official recognition for lightsaber combat as a sport from Mexico's National Sports Commission (Conade).
