After receiving ratings from Germany's entertainment software regulating body, there's a little bit of hype over the possibility of some of Sega's previous arcade hits - Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers - coming to home consoles...again.
Both titles made their debut in arcades in the mid 90's, ('94 for Fighter and '95 for Vipers), both were made by Sega's AM2 development team, both were based on the Model 2 arcade board, both were eventually ported to Sega's home console at the time (the Saturn), and both featured similar style, appearance, and gameplay mechanics: kick, punch, block.
But Fighting Vipers stood out. Gameplay was faster and more aggressive. Characters sported armor that could be knocked off, making them more vulnerable to hits. Walls were introduced as part of the environment, unlike Virtua Fighter where play would end if a character stepped out of the ring. Vipers players could use the walls to their advantage, jumping and bouncing off of them ala Chun-Li, or be knocked right through them. The key to armor busting and wall breaking were power hits, which could be done as a singular attack or part of a combo.
As you can see, I'm a bit of a Vipers fan (read the review here).
Also receiving a rating alongside the two aforementioned titles was the odd Sonic the Fighters, a truly bizarre fighter featuring Sega's acclaimed fuzzy hedgehog mascot duking it out alongside his animal pals against Robotnik and his creations.
While nothing official has been announced, it's definitely a possibility, especially given Sega's making past titles like NiGHTS into Dreams, Sonic Adventure 2 (despite errors) and Jet Set Radio available on Xbox Live and PSN.
We'll let you know when more information is announced.
