Actresses Vie for Female Lead in Captain America Sequel, The Winter Solider

Anticipation is high to see which young actress will be next to take the place of actress Hayley Atwell's portrayal of Cap's love interest Peggy Carter.

If the comics are any indication, any of three young actresses (discussed further down) will take on the role of Sharon Carter, Peggy's niece. Given the potential physical similarities, it's easy to understand why Cap would be so smitten. And here's the kicker: After hearing her aunt spin wartime tales, Sharon gets inspired, and decides to do her own country proud, and goes on to become an agent of everyone's favorite clandestine organization, S.H.I.E.L.D.

A few adventures aside and with Cap thawed out, she and Cap lead an investigation into the identity of the Winter Soldier, who they eventually discover to be Cap's long lost friend, Bucky Barnes. And amidst all the action, Cap'll need someone to help him readjust to life now that 70 years have gone by in the blink of an eye.

So who's in the running? The New York Post recently listed three actresses. From left to right, we have:

* Of "Twilight" fame (no, not Kristen Stewart), Anna Kendrick
* Felicity Jones, from "Like Crazy"
* And Imogen Poots (heh), of "28 Weeks Later"

If we're going with a family resemblance, my money's on Felicity Jones, but Imogen has held her own against hordes of British zombies. Kendrick may have acted in movies featuring vampires, but as she never had to fight them off, it's hard to see her as a secret-agent-machine-gun-wielding type.

As for the former Carter, Hayley Atwell hasn't been cast to reprise her role, but if she does, expect her to be featured in flashbacks and / or possibly as a significantly older version of Peggy.

"Captain America: The Winter Solider" is set to be released April 4, 2014.
