The future of the Smash Brothers franchise might not be guessing who'll be confirmed for brawl, but what kind of brawl they're confirming for. Meta? Perhaps. But it seems like the roster could possibly shrink when discussions for the direction of Super Smash Brothers when the 3DS version is getting a design treatment.
In an interview with Nintendo Power, Masahiro Sakurai felt the roster was at an end for expansion: " "In terms of quantity, we've probably already reached the limit of what's feasible. I think a change of direction may be what's needed."
The direction is the big mystery. Even a roster of 50, Sakurai laments, gets to be unwieldy and unbalanced, much like Team Ninja complained about franchises that rely on DLC characters after the game is released.
"There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive."
Where would you like to see the Super Smash Brothers franchise go to? Massive interactive stages over huge rosters? Mixing in Mario Party with something more non-traditional? Since the game is still at the development stages, it seems the sky is our golden star's limit.
