WWDC 2012 Prospects: MacBook Pro 17’’ to Retire?

Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) will finally arrive at Moscone Center in San Francisco on Monday. Needless to say, plenty of speculations and rumors have been focused on the next new “hot” product and software.

While many predict that the new MacBook Pro 2012 will feature the highly anticipated Ivy Bridge processor, really thin design, and high resolution Retina displays on the 13-inch and 15-inch versions, only a few even mention about the 17-inch. That may be because Apple will discontinue the 17-inch model starting this year, according to some.

KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple is planning to retire MacBook Pro 17 because the this model only accounted 1.7% of the company’s notebook sales in the first quarter of 2012. MacBook Pro 13-inch and 15-inch, on the other hand, took 46.9% and 16% of the whole notebook sales.

Earlier this week, several alleged spec sheets of MacBook Pro 13-inch and 15-inch were leaked online. According to those spec sheets, which may not be totally reliable, only the 15 –inch will be equipped with Retina Display.

However, all the predictions about the updating for MacBook Pro may go in vain as Ming-Chi pointed that Apple may offer an entirely new design of notebook models and discontinue the entire MacBook Pro lineup.

Currently, Apple is marketing five notebook products: the 13-, 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros and 11- and 13-inch MacBook Airs.

The new design models, according to the rumor, will borrow styles from MacBook Air, positioned between MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with two sizes, 13- and 15-inch.

So what would be the truth? We shall find out on Monday at the WWDC 2012. And perhaps the news on iPhone 5 could be there.
