Max Payne Mobile iPhone Means Bad News for Angry Birds, Draw Something

Rockstar's latest release of Max Payne Mobile for iOS has given the top two apps in Apple's App Store, "Angry Birds Space" and "Draw Something," some competition.

According to the latest reports from Gamasutra, Max Payne Mobile has captured third place in its debut among the most popular paid games.  It was also listed as both iPhone's App and Game of the week.

The App Store's top place spot for paid apps has seen fierce competition between Rovio's Angry Birds Space and OMGPOP's Draw Something.

Draw Something was sitting pretty as at first place until the release of Angry Birds Space bumped OMGPOP's app to second place.  But a couple weeks later, Draw Something returned with a vengeance putting Angry Birds into second.  Angry Birds Space would continue to climb the charts and regain the top spot leaving Draw Something at second and Max Payne at third.

Max Payne Mobile's third place debut has potential to climb even higher as the app introduces a fine tuned third-person shooter that works quite well on a touch screen device.

The mobile version comes with fully optimized HD graphics, making the game look fantastic with similar visuals to the PlayStation 2 console version.  Controls were also customized for mobile devices and allow for social interaction using the game's "Social Club " platform. The game's signature "Bullet Time" slow-mo feature is further enhanced with auto-aim for easier and accurate aiming.

This may spell bad news as players tire from doodling on mobile devices and may opt for a third person shooter for a change in gameplay.  With Draw Something, users play Pictionary with a partner using their mobile device screen as a canvas.  The drawer is given three choices to draw.  Users then use their finger to draw the object as quickly as possible and hope that their partner can guess correctly.

The same may be said for Angry Birds Space where players slinghot destructive birds into deep space.  Rovio and OMGPOPs' app retain their top positions but expect Max Payne to bring on some challenges.

Fans can re-experience "Bullet Time" from the PlayStation days with Max Payne Mobile, which is available for iPhone, iPad and other iOS devices.  The app can be downloaded for $2.99 in the Apple iTunes App Store.  An Android version will be available April 26.
