One of the most notable features of any modern day title – irrespective of the platform – is the massiveness in size. This compels players to keep just enough space left on their PCs or consoles to install the game. But if you're playing with the disc inside, it’s a whole different ball game.
With the pervasiveness of external storage in gaming increasing at a fair rate, it's hoped that whatever new console arrives, it will be fitted with external storage capabilities. However, staff at Microsoft feels differently.
In a recent revelation, Microsoft has confirmed that, at the time of the Xbox One launch at least, gamers will not be permitted to add external storage to their Xbox One systems.
According to a new Major Nelson podcast, answering to a fan’s query at PAX, Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb, Director of Programming for Xbox Live, stated: “The future plan is for definitely to support external storage much like we do on the Xbox 360. My understanding is that feature will not be there at launch because the team is working on some other things, but it definitely is on the list. I don’t know when it will come in though.”
The Xbox One, as of now, is set to arrive with a non-replaceable 500 gigabyte internal hard drive. And by our understanding, it won’t make that big a difference to someone who just bought the system, and it will take some time before you finally fill up that 500GB space. Still, for those that do eventually load up their drives, it's comforting to know Microsoft has plans for external storage.
It was also revealed that players will be able to use a single gamertag to log into both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One concurrently. Whitten was present during IGN's latest Ask Microsoft Anything About Xbox One topic, where he told fans, "You'll be able to be signed on with the same gamertag on both an Xbox 360 and an Xbox One console at the same time. However, like today, you can only be signed into one Xbox 360 and one Xbox One at a time."
Microsoft’s Xbox One is currently set for a November 2013 release, and will retail for $499.
