Microsoft recently announced that both Xbox One S and Xbox One game consoles will get Dolby Atmos surround-sound support during the recent Microsoft Windows event. Atmos is the crown jewel of Dolby's surround-sound technology, which was released for cinemas in 2012.
In 2014, Microsoft announced its release for home theatre use. Today, audiophiles get to experience the high-end sound technology in their game console with Xbox One S and Xbox One.
As reviewed by CNET, the event held by Microsoft did not only focus on designing and 3D image capturing; the company presented the crowd with Xbox One S updates. The updates for the popular game console include the feature of allowing players to hold their own tournaments within the game, which in effect will allow other players to join in via Windows 10 PCs and the Xbox.
While the Xbox One has the ability to play Blu-rays, the Xbox One S tops its predecessor since it comes with a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Although both game consoles can have a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, the issue that most users complain about is that none of the two formats have the ability to output an Atmos AV receiver.
To maximize the experience of the Dolby Atmos in Xbox One S, an Atmos speaker setup needs to be installed. This can be done by adding height channel speakers to your surround sound speaker or by installing cinema speakers. Dolby Atmos is further enhanced by adding height channels in order to produce a more enveloping sound field via a regular 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system.
This announcement paves way to the idea that the Xbox One S and Xbox One game consoles will become one of the best home media devices yet. The update combines the technology of Atmos, 4K, and Blu-ray, which in turn makes one powerful source of sound.
Dolby Atmos will arrive in early 2017 as part of the Creators Update for Xbox One and Xbox One S. The update will be available via bitstream.
