PlayStation All-Stars vs. Nintendo Smash Bros, 13 Years in the Making

Sony's PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is officially announced and will exclusively be available for the PlayStation 3.

Fans caught a glimpse of gameplay showcasing six characters brawling it out on four different stage levels.  Developed by SuperBot Entertainment, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale collects a storied history of great characters and rich worlds combined together in one epic title. Sony cloned the Battle Royale title off of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. franchise where iconic Nintendo characters participate in a four-player battle by knocking each other off screen.

"This game is a celebration for fans of PlayStation and we are excited to deliver the most comprehensive brawler available," said Guy Longworth, Senior Vice President of Marketing, SCEA.

Nintendo's successful string of Super Smash Bros. game titles went unchallenged for 13 years.  Sony will now look to turn PlayStation All Stars into a long string of future titles by incorporating characters from the Sony games universe.

Similar to Smash Bros., All Stars Battle Royale give players access to a variety of PlayStation characters and pits them in a four player full screen brawler.   Basic controls such as jump and attack combined with the directional pad will conjure special moves and attacks.

Fighting in a variety of configurations, players can take the battle online with new set of challenges which includes Tournament mode, Special Event Battle, and Custom Matches allowing players to customize their matches according to their own rules. Throughout the game, players can select and control iconic characters such as Kratos, Sweet Tooth, Parappa, Fat Princess, Colonel Radec, and Sly Cooper among others.

In the trailer, gamers saw several characters in action such as PaRappa the Rapper using his Master Onion martial art skills against Sweet Tooth's gigantic Robot.  Kratos utilizes with his flashy slash attacks while Radec fires long range artillery.

Much like Super Smash Bros' Nintendo inspired levels, Sony showcased several levels that were designed from games such as Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, Little Big Planet, and Gods of War.  Characters do battle in the interactive maps where characters from various games will make random cameos in the background.

According to the press release by Sony, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale has lined-up special characters from some of the game industry's top third party though none have been confirmed other than the 6 presented.

Sony may be presenting more information at this year's E3 video game conference in June.  PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is expected to come out later this year.
