Sony Confirms Uncharted 2 Movie is Happening: Here's What We Know So Far

Sony has confirmed that Uncharted 2, the sequel to its live-action adaptation of the popular video game, is happening and has resulted in mixed reactions.

The announcement comes two years after the studio brought the movie version of the PlayStation franchise. The majority of the updates for the second movie in the franchise have been filled with uncertainty regarding whether or not it would actually happen.

Sony's President of International Distribution Steven O'Dell listed the Uncharted sequel as one of the studio's upcoming projects. The reveal was made during a presentation at the CineEurope trade show.

However, he did not reveal any other details regarding the sequel beyond confirming that it is actually being worked on. The original film featured Spider-Man star Tom Holland in the lead role of Nathan Drake and Transformers star Mark Wahlberg as his mentor, Victor "Sully" Sullivan.

The latter also spoke out about the potential Uncharted sequel a few times in the past since the original movie's release. He mentioned last year that Sully would get to have his iconic mustache for the entire time in the second film, according to GameSpot.

The actor also said in February earlier this year that a script for the sequel of the Uncharted movie had already been submitted but added that he has not yet had a chance to read it. The director of the original movie, Ruben Fleischer, previously indicated his interest in returning for a sequel.

However, there has been no official confirmation of a deal being struck with the director regarding Uncharted 2. It also remains unclear whether the Uncharted project will move up the timeline from a prequel to the games to the contemporary story that will introduce Nate's romantic partner, Elena Fisher.

The confirmation of the sequel comes as the original movie fell flat with critics despite earning $407 million worldwide at the box office. The other projects that Sony is working on include 28 Years Later, a Beatles movie, and SNL 1975.

The Potential Story

The original Uncharted movie that featured Tom Holland had not one, but two post-credit scenes. The first one revealed that Nate's long-since missing and presumed dead brother, Sam, is actually alive and is locked in a jail, said EmpireOnline.

On the other hand, the second post-credit scene clearly sets up a sequel that will more closely mirror the story of the first Uncharted game. It sees the lovable protagonist discussing Nazi maps with a new character, Gage, who is played by Pilou Asbaek.

Gage then turned out to be an evil-doer and Sully was the one who saved Nate during the latter's less-than-favorable predicament. However, the duo are then suddenly cornered by an unseen individual that some fans speculate could be Nate's romantic interest, Elena Fisher.

When talking about the script, Wahlberg said that he got a call about it, adding that he was not able to grow a real beard and mustache. However, he was told to grow it since it would take a while.

The actor was also interested in the story of the sequel and where the adventure would take them, according to CBR.
