System Shock Remake Development Is Now 'Largely Complete'

The System Shock Remake Is More Or Less Finished, Barring Polish

Development on the upcoming System Shock remake is now "largely complete," says the developer following its first reveal trailer at the PC Gaming Show 2022 hosted by PC Gamer magazine.

As reported by IGN, the trailer showcases the game via a fourth-wall breaking narration by the rogue AI called SHODAN. The AI is the game's antagonist, and makes it very clear that it's not friendly. What followed it was a gameplay montage of first-person shooter action, in-game environments, and a generous helping of story hints that helped make the original System Shock game stand out as an icon.

Here is the trailer, uploaded to the official PC Gamer YouTube channel:

The trailer itself, however, is just under 2 minutes as it is followed by a sub-3-minute interview featuring Warren Spector: the original creator of the System Shock series.

In the interview, Spector is asked about how the systems from the original 1994 game carried over into the remake. He obviously talked about the graphics and how the original one was pretty "primitive" in the department, and also the UI which we could assume is now far more streamlined and not going to fill the entire screen with text as it used to do.

But on the case of the development process, Nightdive Studios' director of business development Larry Kuperman mentioned how the game is more or less finished already - barring any thorough polishing.

"You can play through it from beginning to end, all weapons and enemies are in place in working. What remains to be done is what is termed 'polish.' Our goal is that the release version is as close to perfection as possible.'

One could argue that polishing a game requires even more work than actually making it, so it might take a while before the System Shock remake release date is revealed. Either way, it has been confirmed as coming to both last-gen and current-gen consoles, as well as PC.

What Is System Shock?

For those of you who might have been too young to play the original game, here's a bit of history. System Shock, as previously mentioned, first released back in 1994 for MS-DOS, Linux, Windows, and Classic Mac OS.

It got its first "remake" of sorts with the System Shock Enhanced Edition, which was also developed by Nightdive and released on Steam back in 2015. But the modern remake itself wouldn't come to be until a Kickstarter campaign promised a "faithful reboot" of the game. The campaign raised over $1.3 million from 21,625 backers, which allowed it to be made.

The original game was hailed as one of the best of its generation; influencing so many other games that came after it. As such, the upcoming remake has massive shoes to fill if it wants to live up to the legend. But Spector, being the creator of the game, seems to be quite confident in the remake.
