Super Mario Bros Movie Celebrates its 20th Anniversary With A Message From John Leguizamo

The Super Mario Bros Movie was bad. It was so bad that its star said he regretted making it. Hard-boiled English actor Bob Hoskins once said in an interview with The Guardian that if he could go back he wouldn't even had made the film.

For the uniformed, they made a movie very (very) loosely-based on the famed video game characters. The film saw Hoskins and John Leguizamo play the brother duo Mario and Lugi. Unlike the game - which lacks any real story - the film saw the brother plumbers travel to an alternate reality to save a princess from a human version of Bowser. The archenemy of the franchise was played by Dennis Hopper as a slick haired baddy trying to continue his iron-fisted grasp on the alternative universe.

The film had very little in common with the game. Characters shared the same name and the bros. were plumbers, but that's about it. Lugi was in love with a women who was a princess in another universe, and oh yeah, Mario was married.

So again, the film was bad. Yet, for whatever reason, some people seem to hold a special place in their heart for it. Out of what is assumed to be irony, a website was created to serve in dedication to the movie. The folks behind the site even held a special screening to celebrate the film's 20th anniversary.

As a thank you to fans, Leguizamo made a short video for the screening and put it on Youtube. Surprisingly, he holds no ill will to the movie and has some fun stories to share about the production. In the film's defense, Leguizamo says the movie was the first video game adaptation of its time and broke new ground for the genre.

"I'm glad people appreciate the movie. It was the first - nobody had ever done it before. We made a lot of great things and we made a lot of mistakes," says Leguizamo in the video.

No matter how the film turned out it was nice of Leguizamo to make the short video. Much has been said about the awfulness of the Super Mario Bros. movie so it's nice that someone who worked on the production took the time to talk about the film. In all fairness, Leguizamo's video is probably better than the whole of the movie.
