New Super Mario Bros. U is an upcoming launch title for the Nintendo Wii U and is a side-scrolling platformer that features the iconic Mario. It is also one our picks for must own Wii U launch titles.
The game returns Mario to his 2D roots and allows up to four players to play simultaneously, choosing from Mario, Luigi, and two Toads. There also certain game modes that allows players to play as their Mii characters. Although the game has not yet released, many game site are posting reviews for the new game. Here is our round up of those reviews.
IGN says in its review of the game, "For two decades, Mario's 3D adventures have stolen the show. New Super Mario Bros. U reminds us there's life in 2D." IGN also says, that "Nintendo's approach here strikes a great balance in all areas, ranging from its difficulty to design to enemies and bosses. And for everything the basic Story Mode does right - and that's a considerable amount - the Challenge Mode will be remembered as a key moment in the life of the New Mario series, where Nintendo realized it didn't have to sacrifice the core gamer's experience at the expense of a more casual audience." IGN gives the game a 9.1-out-of-10.
Eurogamer says in its review for the new game, "the campaign stages are more creative than most things the New Super Mario Bros. series has offered to date. There's a mountainside scattered with stiff little bubbles of water for you swim through in order to advance and there's a squadron of glossy flying beetles who provide stepping stones for you on a lofty scrolling level." Eurogamer gives the new game a 9-out-of-10 rating.
Video game website Joystiq says "in New Super Mario Bros. U, Mario comes closer to his glory days than he has in years." The website also says in its review that "New Super Mario Bros. U reintroduces what made the original games so good in the first place. It proves that there's more to the formula than just impeccable platforming. There's a sense of wonder again, of exploration and discovery. I'm not quite prepared to say New Super Mario Bros. U fully recaptures the spark of Mario's 2D heyday, but it's an impressive step in the right direction." Joystiq rates the game 4.5-out-of-5 stars.
On aggregating website Metacritic the game has received generally favorable reviews earning it a current rating of an 84-out-of-100, which is based on eleven reviews for the game. GameRankings currently has the game rated an 83.38 percent based on 13 reviews.
