Sony's Project Moprheus is the talk of the town (well, GDC and the internet at least), and gamers are excited to hear about the future of accessible and affordable virtual reality technology. Well, with an official reveal under our belt, we now have a mighty big rumored leak to address – one that discusses an alleged internal debate on how Sony is hoping to make VR the cool new thing for everyone and the other being what to expect when the device launches.
Now, because this is a supposed leak that was posted to Reddit by someone who has a “friend” at Sony, grab yourself a big boulder of salt and regard all the information as a rumor – it may or may not be factual, but it's fairly in-depth and does present some interesting ideas.
For starters, the alleged leak suggests that Sony's VR tech has been in development for quite some time and was going to originally release in the Fall of 2014. The device will be named something akin to PlayStation View or perhaps even Vision. Sony would be subsidizing the cost of the VR device by pushing it to retail at a price tag between $250-$299. The team behind the development of the VR headset are also hoping that Sony allows the device to include higher specs, with the caveat of a higher price, so that the tech could really shine.
On the games front, rumor has it that Sony's first party studios are working on VR in Drive Club (which may explain the delay), and in unique versions of The Last of Us and God of War. Other studios close to Sony like Guerrilla Games and Sucker Punch will working on new VR-centric titles.
The rumored leak claims that Sony wants to promote virtual reality as a social activity that's also the future of the industry, but not undermine what the PlayStation 4 will offer without it. The company wants to push VR like they pushed CDs, DVDs, and Blurays by using the PlayStation 4 as a platform where VR tech can be easily adopted. Because of their position to launch VR with consideration of the PlayStation 4's launch, Sony allegedly held back on releasing their VR device this year and are aiming for a fiscal 2014 release when more developers will be able to support the device.
The feature set that the VR team want to reach is a wider FOV and 1440p at 90fps.
The leak then states that Sony's PS4 is far more capable than what we've seen with launch titles and that his source has seen private demos that surpass anything revealed yet.
All in all, there's a whole lot of stuff stated by this “leak” and it's either coming from a place of truth or someone that's really, really bored. Either way, take all of it with a big grain of salt.
True or not, virtual reality is going to be big this generation from console makers and on PC.
