The wildly popular multiplayer online battle game World of Tanks started on PC and recently moved to consoles, amassing a huge player base between the two platforms. The free-to-play detailed tank warfare game is coming to mobile devices too as World of Tanks Blitz, and the closed beta is now underway.
Anyone can apply for the beta now that it's officially active through the website here. The game is available on a "wide range" of iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, though details on hardware requirements have not yet been given. The closed beta, however, is only playable on iPads for now. Android and other iOS device compatibility will be added in the coming months.
World of Tanks Blitz offers seven-on-seven PvP battles and promises over 100 "iconic military machines from USA, Germany, and USSR" which includes light, medium and heavy tanks, in addition to tank destroyers.
"World of Tanks Blitz Closed Beta will get us one step closer to building an online gaming universe, persistently available on a variety of platforms," said Andrei Ryabovol, Director of Global Operations at Wargaming. "We think that's a great goal, and we'll be working on ways to make the tank combat experience on tablets and smartphones even more engaging, based on the feedback we receive."
Check out the trailer below for a glimpse of the action you can expect on your mobile device. It looks pretty good, if obviously not quite as detailed as the original PC version. It's unclear how many players will be accepted into the closed beta, but I imagine your chances are better if you apply sooner, so head over and sign up if you're interested.
