Ghost Recon Online Release Date: F2P Ghost Recon Online Becomes Ghost Recon: Phantoms

F2P Ghost Recon Online Becomes Ghost Recon: Phantoms

Ghost Recon Online is now Ghost Recon: Phantoms, announced Ubisoft. The free-to-play PC exclusive Ghost Recon game has been in beta for 21 months with players helping shape the experience and the changes that have been recently announced. The open beta has come to a close and with that comes word of what the final game will look and play like.

Off the bat, the visual changes to Ghost Recon: Phantoms are very apparent. The game's lighting, level design, and gameplay have all seen changes and improvements based on player feedback and metrics. On the gameplay front, character classes, weapons, and gear have been added to the game in order to improve variety.

Phantoms is described as a tactical third person shooter with the level of teamwork found in MOBAs. Players will be required to communicate with each other in order to be on the winning side of 16-player online matches. Three character classes, six special devices, and thousands of weapon customizations are said to be available in the game.

Phantoms has also been given a backstory adding some context to the online fights and who the phantoms are. “The Phantoms are basically ex-Ghosts – a rogue faction who disagreed on the purpose of their fight, or just realized that by bringing enough money to the table they could lead their own war and push their own interests,” said Producer Corey Facteau. “Ghosts and Phantoms are not that different; they are feuding brothers – two sides of the same coin – and the border between the two is very thin.”

Tom Clandy's Ghost Recon: Phantoms will be released on Steam and PC on April 10. It has been developed by Ubisoft Singapore and is free-to-play. For more on the game's background and upcoming changes from Producer Corey Facteau, check out his Phantoms Q&A.
