Twitch has been everywhere lately. The online service is being used on next-gen consoles to let gamers stream themselves playing, becoming E3's official streaming partner at the live events, and hosting the internet phenomenon Twitch Plays Pokemon. Now, it's partnered with Capcom to create a new gaming league.
The two companies have announced an agreement to create the first Street Fighter-centric "Capcom Pro Tour", a year-long fighting game league. The competition will take place at events through the year and eventually lead to a 16-player grand final n December, dubbed the Capcom Cup.
The particular Street Fighter game used in the tournament will be Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition 2012, and will late transition to Ultra Street Fighter 4 when it's released in June. There are seven premier events named so far, the winners of which will be granted 10 of 16 spots in the grand finals. The list of announced premium events is as follows:
Final Round (March 14~16 - Atlanta, GA, USA)
NorCal Regionals (April 18~20 - Sacramento, CA, USA)
Southeast Asia Majors (June 20~22 - Singapore)
Community Effort Orlando (June 27~29 - Orlando, FL, USA)
Evolution Championship Series (July 11~13 - Las Vegas, NV, USA)
The Fall Classic (October 10~12 - Raleigh, NC, USA)
DreamHack Winter (November 27~30 - Jönköping, Sweden)
It's quite the global list of locations, giving players from all over the world a chance to win a tournament in their region and get a spot in the finals. The final three events are yet to be named, and the rest of the 16 spots will be given based on points attained throughout the year. Finishing in the top 16 places at an event gets you points, and the last six spots in the final (in addition to the 10 premium event winners) are the six players with the most points at the end of the season.
