It's a gloomy Christmas for those over at Pixelmage Games, the makers of "Hero's Song." The latest news surrounding the game is that it is discontinued and that the studio is closing its doors.
The sad news comes via Polygon, which reports that there's a lengthy history behind the company shut down and the cancellation of "Hero's Song." The formerly upcoming role-playing game that was first unveiled as the debut title of Pixelmage Games has been cancelled due to lack of funds.
According to the Gamespot, "Hero's Song" began with a Kickstarter campaign aiming to raise $800,000 for the development of the game. The campaign was canceled a week after it launched, as Pixelmage Games head John Smedley admitted that there were mistakes in their pitch to backers of the project. He did, however, promsie to carry on with the project.
Later, Pixelmage launched a similar campaign on Indiegogo, hoping to raise $200,000. However, they were only able to gather $94,000, after which "Hero's Song" launched on Steam Early Access. Smedley has taken to Twitter to share the sad news about the company shut down. Their official website has also been replaced by a page indicating their farewell note.
Smedley wrote on the page that for the past year, they've been working hard on "Hero's Song," but ultimately, it was the lack of sales that drove the project to the ground. They also indicated a full refund for those who purchased the game. For those who purchased via Steam, they will get a full refund. For those who donated via Indiegogo, they are encouraged to send an email to Pixelmage indicating the details of their donation.
Pixelmage and Smedley also thanked fans and supporters of "Hero's Song" for all the effort they put into helping them develop the game. They wrote, "The fact that we weren't able to finish the game is painful, but the journey of making Hero's Song has been a great experience for us and we're just sorry we couldn't take it all the way."
