The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a strong contender for my favorite game of all-time. I wouldn't try to say it's perfect, but it is set in a great universe, is a lot of fun, has a fantastic narrative, interesting characters, and has a plot twist that rivals the famous "[Luke], I am your father." That's right, I said it-and you'll know what I mean if you played the game.
Xbox executive Phil Spencer, Corporate VP and Head of Microsoft Studios, stated on Twitter that it's one of his top 6 favorite RPGs ever when asked by a fan to name his list. When asked if a remake was possible he said, "I like the idea. No idea how the rights would work on that now with all the changes. I'll put a vote in."
Now, this is hardly any sort of confirmation that this is game is in the works, but it's encouraging for fans who want it to happen--a major Xbox executive who holds sway loves the game and would want an HD/Anniversary remake edition. There are some stumbling blocks though, so if it does happen I imagine it'd be a long way off.
To start, there's the normal hurdles to getting a game made- justifying that it's worth the time and cost of development, getting a team, etc. This game in particular though has a lot of licenses and permissions required in order to use the franchise.
Disney now owns the rights to "Star Wars", so they would have to agree to this, and EA and Bioware own the Knights of the Old Republic franchise. Given that they used the IP to make The Old Republic, the MMO set in the same universe, it's possible this conflicts with their current vision of the series.
If they can get around this, and Spencer said he'd put in a word for it to happen, it'd be very exciting to me and other fans. The series takes places thousands of years before the events of the films, and focuses on its own unique characters and twisted story line. Kotor 2 was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, and while it was also very good, didn't quite reach the narrative heights of the first game, and felt a bit incomplete. The Old Republic, currently free to play, uses some of the characters from the stories of the two singleplayer RPGs, which were released in 2003 and 2004.
