Jade Raymond, prolific Ubisoft game producer known for such titles as Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and now Watchdogs, recently conducted an interview with AdWeek. In it, Raymond briefly touched upon speculation for the next location for the Assassin's Creed series and dispelled a rumor that AC fans have been wondering for several years: will the series be going Japan? No, but she's not against the idea.
In the interview, Jade Raymond revealed that the next game in the Assassin's Creed series will not take place in Japan, but in a different backdrop: her “favorite” historical era. No details were revealed on what her favorite era is, but fans are already speculating between The French Revolution, an era featuring Vikings, Victorian England, and maybe even ancient Egypt.
It's no surprise that Assassin's Creed fans have wanted to battle the Templars in Japan. In 2012, Assassin's Creed III creative director Alex Hutchinson addressed fan requests for Japan as a backdrop - he had the following to say, “If you got, say Samurai Japan, you'd realize pretty quickly that I think you've played a lot of ninja games, and this is not as interesting as you thought it was going to be." Hutchinson told Kotaku.
Who doesn't like ninjas? Sure, they might be some of the most common assassins used in media, but that's not all a Japanese backdrop could contribute to an Assassin's Creed game. Even so, I can understand the desire to do something different – to take us to a time period with a better direct connection to the series' story and its characters. Well, there's always Assassin's Creed VI. If Ubisoft's release schedule continues, we'll see that one in no time!
