The most recent Spelunky, the hit cave-delving indie roguelike, was a remake of the 2008 Windows game of the same title that was released for the Xbox Live Arcade on Xbox 360. It was later ported to PS3, PS Vita, and also made its way back onto PC, which is why I can now show you this awesome PC mod that transforms Spelunky into Metroid.
Youtube user BaerTaffy, who hosts many entertaining Let's Play videos, was given early access to this amazing mod by its creator, known as joey4track. Check out at least part of his roughly half hour play-through, because the mod is really something. The game plays the same as Spelunky, but looks, sounds, and feels like Metroid. The music you know from the series plays in the background, and the items, weapons, environments and enemies have been converted into Metroid equivalents--quite impressive!
The mod is not yet released, but I have no doubt many Metroid fans won't be able to wait after they watch it in action, even if they're not currently Spelunky fans. Any Spelunky lovers who also do happen to have a soft spot for Metroid, well, you've just hit the jackpot.
Joey4track was thrilled to have Spelunky creator Derek Yu, seemingly impressed, send a retweet about his project. He hopes to have the full mod out by April according to his Twitter, but we're not going to hold his independent free-time project to a strict deadline. Stay tuned, and check out Baer and other streamers' play sessions of the mod in the meanwhile.
