NBA Trade Rumors: Kings' Rudy Gay could be a target for Timberwolves as team seeks frontcourt help

The Minnesota Timberwolves could look into the possibility of trading for Julius Randle, with the team looking to add frontcourt help.

The Timberwolves are expected to be buyers in the trade market before the February 2017 deadline, with the team reportedly looking for frontcourt help, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst. While it is unclear which players the team has been eyeing, Justin Rowan of Hoops Habit believes it could be a stretch four at the expense of Kris Dunn.

"Their willingness to part with Dunn, on the other hand, could provide them with a solid return if the price is right," Rowan wrote. "The ideal return would net them a stretch 4 that can provide defense."

There are only few defensive stretch fours in the league and probably none is for the taking at this point. But if Minnesota would package Kris Dunn and another key player down the team's rotation, it could be enough to land a versatile forward.

One potential target the Timberwolves could consider is Sacramento Kings forward Rudy Gay, who is set to explore free agency next summer.

Gay operates at the wing most of the time, but he could be a lethal stretch four when playing small ball lineup. The 30-year-old veteran is a capable scorer and can cover up multiple positions on the defensive end.

Dunn would make a perfect trade chip if the Timberwolves pursue Gay. The Kings are in need of a reliable playmaker, and while Dunn has yet to develop into that type of player, the fifth overall pick has the skills and tools to become Sacramento's top point guard.

For the Timberwolves, trading for Gay is a low-buy high-risk option, with the forward likely to become a one-year rental. But if the Timberwolves are really into adding frontcourt help, Gay could be a viable option.
