Revolution Software has announced that Broken Sword 5: the Serpent's Curse has just been released on iOS. You can pick it up in iTunes for $4.99/£2.99, a tiny price to pay for the sequel to one of the best adventure games of all time.
Of course, it almost didn't even happen. Without Kickstarter the developer couldn't have created the game they wanted (it would have been far shorter and much more of a linear experience) but thankfully Double Fine swooped in to show everyone the way. Revolution raised nearly 800k in September 2012, funding which helped release it for PC/Mac last December 4th. Or, at least, half of it. The game was split up into two Episodes to facilitate a timely release and Episode 1 released to much critical acclaim. Now of course gamers are clamoring for the second one, but first Revolution sought to release it on iOS. (An Android version is also nearing release.)
Here's their list of features for the mobile version-
- The latest in the smash hit multi-million selling Broken Sword series
- Gripping story, engaging puzzles, voiced by a top quality cast
- Highly acclaimed 'slide and tap' interface – simple but hugely powerful
- Context-sensitive help system – access hints to solve even the hardest puzzles
- Full Game Center integration – including in-game achievements
The game also supports English / German / French speech options with subtitles in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian. It comes in at a hefty 1.8 GB so make sure you have some room clear before you try downloading.
As for Broken Sword 5 :Episode 2 it's coming.... eventually. Yesterday Revolution posted a video of Rolf Saxon and Kerry Shale recording the lines for George and Rickenbacker, which is great but shows that there's still a bit of work to be done on the game. "We intend to hold the Episode 2 recording sessions for Rolf and the rest of the cast in early February, with the game releasing some weeks later," designer Charles Cecil stated in a post on their Facebook page. "On the one hand Episode 2 will be a little later than originally planned, but on the other, I get to polish the game, which I'm pleased about. Thanks for your patience."
According to that it shouldn't be that much longer before the full game is released. iOS gamers will be able to pick up the second part as an in-app purchase. More as we hear it!
