I like to think that just about every gamer has their preferred space shooter series. Personally, I loved blasting away at all the weird ass fish ships in Darius Gaiden, but that was me. One series that made waves in the genre was R-Type. Released in arcades in the late 80's, I'm willing to bet a fair amount of you missed this one, but older gamers may remember picking up later in the series when a semi-port of R-Type II arrived on the Super Nintendo as Super R-Type. Now, the original R-Type II is coming to the mobile market and offering a taste of the old school shooter on two of the most popular mobile devices out there.
As a press release detailed, DotEmu, whose work has included developing other older titles for mobile devices, like the first R-Type and Another World (both of which were reviewed quite well), is working on bringing the space shooter sequel over to Android and iOS devices:
"Two years after R-Type, the Bydo Empire is back for more! Man your spaceship and take on the Bydo with new weapons (Search Laser & Shotgun Laser) and a new bomb type. Collect a plethora of items and powers-up across various improved sets and make your way to the top of the leaderboard."
Let's be honest, no one played these games for the story -- it was all about button mash blasting some giant, screwed up mecha-alien...thing (see picture above), while swiftly dodging all manner of enemy fire and suicidal ships that had no qualms about crashing into you.
R-Type II followed the same basic principles as its forefather (not to mention other shooters) with different weapons, ship upgrades, eight-way movement, and so on. But one thing it added was to let players utilize a "charged" shot, a feature still used in a variety of game genres today, so show some respect.
No word on exactly when R-Type II will arrive for either OS beyond "soon," but there's a trailer at least. Check it out below.
