After Disney's purchase of LucasFilm and LucasArts by proxy last October, only to shut the studio down that spring, Star Wars fans have had a rough go of it these last few months as far as video games are concerned. One of the most looked forward to titles was Star Wars 1313, a game that promised to take players into the eponymous and seedy level 1313 of Coruscant. Despite promises from Disney that current projects would not be affected by the acquirement, Star Wars 1313 was ultimately shelved. Still, hopes were high that development would one day go on, but that's a dream players have been forced to wake up from. While work is ongoing on a new Star Wars: Battlefront courtesy of EA, the 1313 trademark has since expired, and it looks like Disney has no plans to renew it.
The game is currently classified by the United States Patent and Trademark Office as "abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued." Could it be resurrected? Don't count on it.
Thanks to the deal between Disney and EA to have the latter exclusively work on any and all future Star Wars titles, combined with EA's being headlong into development of a new Star Wars: Battlefront game, this looks to be the penultimate end to 1313.
Still, looking at the and the minefield that is Battlefield 4, perhaps it's best that 1313 be given this mercy killing instead of suffering the same fate as the latest Call of Duty rival.
The game's setting had people convinced that they would be able to play as the infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett. Hyping the game at the time, a press release described that "players take control of a lethal bounty hunter in a never-before-seen dark and mature world, Star Wars 1313 introduces an integrated development approach by bringing together great artists across the Lucasfilm organization, including LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, Lucasfilm Animation Ltd. and Skywalker Sound. A third person cinematic action adventure game, Star Wars 1313 will bring to life the Coruscant underworld, the most dangerous place in the Star Wars galaxy."
The game debuted at E3 2012, and that was all we saw of it. You can see the video that LucasArts brought with them to the expo below courtesy of GameTrailers.
