The road to the Oscars can sometimes be a very tricky one. Sometimes, a really great film comes along and is completely ignored by Academy voters. There's no question that the institution has had its own share of controversies, but the Academy Awards remains the highest honor in Hollywood.
A few movies have made the shortlist of possible films to receive an Academy Award nomination. Though voting hasn't started for the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (voting starts on January 5) there are a few films and industry professionals who are in the running for the golden trophy.
So far, "La La Land" (directed by Damien Chazelle) and "Moonlight" (directed by Barry Jenkins) have gotten the most pre-Oscars accolades among this year's roster of films. "La La Land" has scored a People's Choice Award, Critics Choice - Best Picture and AFI - Movies of the Year. "Moonlight" has so far won AFI - Movie of the Year, National Board of Review - Top 10 Films, Gotham Awards - Best Feature among others.
"La La Land" director Damien Chazelle and "Moonlight" director Barry Jenkins have also respectively gotten the most awards for Best Director this season. Chazelle has won TIFF's - People's Choice Award, Critics Choice Best Director award, The Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Best Director award among others.
Jenkins in the other hand, has so far won the National Board of Review Best Director award, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Best Director award and New York Film Critics Circle Best Director award among others.
