And the moment we all have been waiting for. According to reports, Ubisoft has announced that the company’s tactical third-person shooter title Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online will be available for Windows PC via Steam Early Access.
Ghost Recon Online, for those of you not really aware of it, is basically a team-based shooter where players partake in 16-player matches. And according to producer Corey Facteau, bringing Ghost Recon Online to Steam has been the developing team's aim since the game's initial inception.
"Bringing Ghost Recon Online to Steam has been our goal since the game's inception," Facteau stated via the official press release for the same. "We took the time necessary to reach a quality level that can go head to head with the best online games available today before releasing on Steam.”
“As the top shooter for gamers who enjoy team gameplay, we have also seen our audience expand to include MOBA fans, who comprise fifty percent of our user base. To ensure a seamless transition to the new platform, we will use Early Access to fine tune the Ghost Recon Online experience before releasing it to the rest of the world."
Ubisoft announced Ghost Recon Online back in May 2011 when it was revealed that the online offering for the game would be developed via Ubisoft Singapore and that it will be on a free-to-play structure with premium items available for purchase.
"The online market is an exciting new frontier for video games and for gamers," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated at that time.
"With Ghost Recon Online, and other major upcoming projects, Ubisoft is creating online experiences that allow our fans to stay connected to their favorite brands and to continually receive new content and gameplay. This direct link with our fans will allow us to create new and ever better experiences for them."
Later, in August 2012, Ghost Recon Online announced open beta across 40 countries, as revealed by the company during its Gamescom 2012 press briefing.
Ghost Recon Online was previously released in open beta as a free-to-play shooter title for Windows PC in 2012. And although the game is already available via Early Access in Canada, a worldwide release is expected this spring.
