‘Overwatch’ Latest News & Update: Players Hate Mei’s New Legendary Skin; Blizzard Responds To Backlash

Blizzard recently deployed its Christmas event for "Overwatch" that included several new character skins, emotes, as well as a special Brawl mode. However, many fans expressed disappointment over Mei's new legendary skin given its recolored design.

"Overwatch" gamers received a treat with the release of Blizzard's Christmas event named "Winter Wonderland." With a slew of new in-game items, victory poses and emotes, players can even choose their pick among new skins to re-dress favorite characters in celebration of the festive season.

One of the game characters who received a legendary class skin included Mei. With a red-colored suit and a Santa hat, Mei resembled a tougher version of Mrs. Claus.

However, "Overwatch" players complained that Blizzard only re-colored Mei's default skin with red and green hues for the special "Winter Wonderland" event. Gamer feedback posted on Reddit, as cited by Polygon, mentioned that Mei's holiday skin should not be considered legendary. Other gamers also highlighted Mei's new legendary skin's hefty 3,000 credit cost and claimed that the price tag is not commensurate to the skin's design.

Visually, Mei's new holiday legendary skin may seem like a simple recoloring of the said character's default skin. However, Blizzard developers added a new feature where Mei's Ice Block would transform into the Christmas season's iconic Snow Man provided that she is wearing the holiday skin.

Despite the negative feedback, a Blizzard representative shared with Polygon that it still considers Mei's new skin as a "great Legendary skin" perfect for Christmas. The representative added, "We always pay close attention to the community and long before the event started they hoped that Mei turned into a snowman when she did Cryo Freeze and that's indeed what her legendary skin does."

Meanwhile, the "Overwatch" Christmas event also introduced a holiday-themed Brawl mode named "Mei's Snowball Offensive. With a 6v6 battle, gamers play as Mei whose only weapon is a single-shot snowball gun. Once fired, players can reload the weapon with the piled-up snow around the game's Ecopoint Antartica.

The new "Overwatch" Christmas event will run from Dec. 13 until Jan. 2, 2017. Watch a teaser clip for the said event below:
