It is not surprising at all if fans will not be able to see Elena and Damon in one scene again. Reports seem to make it clear that there will be no Delena reunion in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8. Despite the fact that Julie Plec indirectly promises Nina Dobrev's comeback to the series, it looks like her voice over scene was the "return" she's talking about.
Stefan and Damon's Fate
As of writing, Stefan and Damon's fate in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 is still unknown. However, the stars who portray the characters have a clear vision of what they wanted to happen in the finale.
Based on their interviews, both Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder want to see their character die. They both believe that after all the evil thing they had done in the past, Stefan and Damon don't deserve to have a happy ending in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8.
If the showrunner, Julie Plec, will follow this idea from Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, this only means one thing, Caroline and Elena (if she ever wakes up) will be left heartbroken (including the Steroline and Delena fans) in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8.
Elena's Comeback is Damon's Death
Since the actors are really vocal on how they pictured their fate in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 finale which leads to many speculations that if they both died, Caroline and Elena will end up with someone else or they will be alone in the end.
For Caroline, some say that Klaus will return in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 and he will be reunited with the woman. Elena, on the other hand, will end up alone, waking up without Damon by her side.
Nina Dobrev promised her return and by return means, she might wake up in the finale of "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 but the thing is, she will be waking up alone without Damon and all her loved ones. If this happened, then, like what the cast has been hinting, this might be the tragic ending they are talking about.
