"Suits" actress Meghan Markle is talking about her childhood and how it was like to grow up as a biracial. The actress, who found herself instant fame the day that the world found out that she was the new girlfriend of none other than Prince Harry of England, penned a heartfelt essay for Elle UK about the pain she experienced growing up mixed-race.
Meghan Markle says she was each day about what her ethnicity was. Markle has a Caucasian father and African American mother. Meghan Markle says her parents, who are divorced, made her feel special instead of different .
"To describe something as being black and white means it is clearly defined. Yet when your ethnicity is black and white, the dichotomy is not that clear," Markle writes. "In fact, it creates a grey area. Being biracial paints a blurred line that is equal parts staggering and illuminating."
She recalls an experience in seventh grade when she could not decide which box she needed to check on her ethnicity when there was a consensus in school. There were only two boxes, one for white and one for black. Meghan Markle remembers how her teacher told her to check the box for Caucasian because of her looks.
But Prince Harry's girlfriend decided to leave it blank because she felt confused. Even as she grew up and wanted to become an actress, her mixed race was proving it difficult to find roles for her. Meghan says she felt in the middle as the "ethnic chameleon", not getting roles because she did not look black enough for the black roles or white enough for the white roles.
Meghan Markle eventually found success in playing Rachel Zane on "Suits", and her mixed race beauty has caught the eye of one of the world's most eligible royal, Prince Harry. Prince Harry has been vocal about his disgust over what he claims are harassment against his girlfriend Meghan by the press. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle seem to be getting serious in their relationship as the Prince even took the time to visit the actress in Canada after his Caribbean tour.
