DayZ Developer Bohemia has a lot to celebrate for the new year. Not only did their Steam Early Access release of the standalone version of DayZ sell over 100k copies the first day, it ended up in the hands of over 400,000 people the first week of release. It's a staggering amount of copies for the small developer and clearly shows that people are not tired of zombies just yet.
On an update on their tumble blog the developers reveal a few different stats.
"It has been a very busy week for the DayZ team:
three DayZ patches released
over 400.000 survivors have entered Chernarus
over 40.000 concurrent users pushed DayZ Alpha servers to their limits
Dean "Rocket" Hall posted more details about our immediate future plans"
Those immediate future plans posted by the creator of the game include a lot of things early adopters of the game will be happy to hear about, such as more zombies, better servers, animals that you can hunt for food and all kinds of security improvements. Check here for the full list.
For the last week Bohemia has been on vacation for the holidays but now they're undoubtedly back at work, trying to squash the dozens of new bugs that have cropped up and trying to finish their game for their now-massive base of gamers. That's not going to be without hiccups of course- don't forget that soon after release they murdered every character in the game by wiping the database clean. As more people play and more bugs are found the inevitability of this happening again just goes up, so don't get too attached to those zombie survivors of yours.
DayZ is already amassing a ton of acclaim as well as sales, but this is just an alpha version of the game. If you can get over the idea of paying $30 for an unfinished game (that will be finished, one day!) DayZ is now available on Steam Early Access right here.
