"Star Wars: Rogue One" star Felicity Jones addressed the comparisons between Jyn Erso and iconic character Luke Skywalker. In a separate interview, she also said that female action heroes are now the "new norm."
Jones told Screen Rant that her character [Erso] is comparable with Luke Skywalker because of the parent/child dynamic explored in the film. She went to reference a scene with Luke in "Empire Strikes Back" that makes her very emotional.
"That was such a huge reference, Empire Strikes Back, particularly that scene where he's hanging on - it makes me cry every time - at the end of the film. But that's very emotional, it's rooted in the parent/child dynamic. Particularly in Rogue One, it's a father/daughter relationship which we haven't seen a lot of in cinema. But absolutely, it's an adventure, a quest to understand who you are or to understand that relationship with your parents," she explains.
"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" tells the story of father and daughter Galen and Jyn Erso. The film is one of the many standalone "Star Wars" films planned by Disney.
In a separate interview, Jones also talked about the recent trend to put female leads in action roles. She said "It's absolutely time that we had female leads and as many females leading films as we do men," BBC reported.
Jones went to say that female action heroes are now the norm and that it is an exciting time to be an actress. She also said that despite the war setting of the film, she is hoping that young boys and girls will be able to relate to Jyn.
"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" opens on Dec. 16, 2016.
