Patrick Wilson will reunite with his "The Conjuring" director James Wan for the upcoming DC film "Aquaman." The actor has been cast in the role of Orm Curry aka Ocean Master, the villainous half-brother of the titular Atlantean superhero played by Jason Momoa.
Wan, who is currently attached to helm the film, revealed Wilson's participation in "Aquaman" in a tweet on Monday, Dec. 12. "In casting news that no one saw coming from 20,000 nautical miles away, I ordain @patrickwilson73 the Ocean Master," Wan wrote. He captioned the post #KingOrm and #Aquaman.
Though more villains could be cast (or may have already been cast) for the highly anticipated film, it looks like Ocean Master could be the main villain in "Aquaman." In the DC Comics, the character shares some similarities with Loki, Thor's devious adopted brother. Orm is Aquaman's human half-brother and is steeped in a sibling rivalry with his brother, who possesses powers he doesn't have. Orm/Ocean Master grew up in Arthur/Aquaman's shadow and was a troubled youth. Like Thor, Aquaman frequently had to bail his brother out of trouble. Despite this, Orm grew up resenting Arthur and their father's perceived preference for his half-brother. He disappeared soon after becoming an amnesiac and reappeared many years later as Ocean Master, Aquaman's nemesis. In the comics, it was revealed that Orm had used technology to turn himself into the supervillain.
Wilson has worked with Wan on "The Conjuring" and "Insidious." Coincidentally, he played the role of Nite Owl in the 2009 comic book adaptation "Watchmen," which was helmed by "Justice League" director Zack Snyder. Apart from Wilson and Momoa, "Aquaman" will star Amber Heard as Mera, the Queen of Atlantis.
Reports suggest that the film, which is slated for a 2018 release, will be shot in part in Sicily. According to Movie Web, Erice mayor James Tranchida has given the go signal to Warner Bros. to film several scenes in the Castle of Venus. In September, Wan posted an Instagram snap of himself at the Amalfi Coast, presumably scouting for shooting locations. The outlet says that Warner Bros. wants to start production on "Aquaman" next summer and that filming is expected to take place in Australia, Wan's home country. The Sicily shoot will reportedly take place in September 2017. "Aquaman" hits theaters Oct. 5, 2018.
