"The Flash" Season 3 may be on its midseason break but various speculations about the CW show's new villain Savitar and his connection with Barry (Grant Gustin) are still rife. However, given the way that the show handled the Savitar arc during its midseason finale, a popular fan theory about the mysterious character has been debunked.
When Savitar first appeared in "The Flash" Season 3, avid fans of the CW superhero show came up with various theories to explain the masked villain's potential connection with Barry. One of the popular theories claimed that Savitar is actually Future Flash.
The said storyline is connected to an arc in "The Flash" comic books named "Out of Time," according to storyline speculations posted on Comic Book Resources. Two decades into the future, Barry discovers an immense rift inside the Speed Force that can only be sealed off if a massive amount of its energy is thrust back into it to fix the tear. Future Flash comes up with a plan to his sacrifice his younger self to put the plan in action.
Given some of the similarities on the visuals used in the said "The Flash" comic book arc and in Season 3 of the CW series, many fans speculated that the two storylines are connected. Savitar's costume in the CW show also contains elements of Future Flash's upgraded silver and blue suit.
However, the events featured in the midseason finale of "The Flash" Season 3 that aired on Dec. 6, Tuesday, debunked the said theory. Titled "The Present," the said episode showed a scene where Barry accidentally traveled to the future and witnessed Savitar killing Iris (Candice Patton).
Story speculations posted on iDigital Times indicated that if the fan theory of Savitar being Future Flash is true, then the mysterious villain would not have killed Iris. Avid fans of the CW series would know how much Barry loves Iris and would do everything in his power to protect her.
At this time, it is still unclear whether Barry's future self has a connection with the said villain. Other speculations hinted that Savitar may be a separate character who came to Barry's world given the Scarlet Speedster's previous actions that created Flashpoint.
