Right now the first episode of The Wolf Among Us is a free download on Xbox 360. Telltale Games' adaptation of Bill Willingham's acclaimed comic series "Fables" has gone free for Microsoft's Countdown to 2014 holiday sale. You have until December 31st to nab it for yourself so don't hesitate, just click over to the Xbox Marketplace and download!
Of course, you should have bought it already! Telltale rightfully got tons of acclaim for the first season of The Walking Dead, arguably the best game of last year, just an incredible experience that has bests the narrative in almost any other game released. That's not hyperbole- across all five episodes you grow incredibly attached to these characters and the literally life-or-death decisions you make are harrowing as hell.
The Wolf Among Us doesn't deal with a zombie apocalypse but it still manages to be tense and exciting, a must-play for any fans of The Walking Dead. In it you play as Bigby Wolf, the wolf of such fairy tales as the one with the three pigs, the one with the little girl and her grandmother, and others. He may have been a terror in the old days but all of the fairy tales you read as a kid are real and have escaped to our world from a war, and there's been an amnesty of sorts. Fables end up living in NYC and Bigby gets the job of Sheriff, keeping the Fables in line and making sure he doesn't let the locals know about the fantastical creatures walking among them.
During the first episode "Faith" you go around investigating crime scenes, interrogating suspects and finding out about a horrific murder. It's an incredible start to the season and there are four more episodes to come, so this is a great way to get a free taste of what's to come. The entire first season of The Wolf Among Us is also on sale right now on Xbox 360 for $10.04, so if you like the first episode be sure to buy it so that you get the others as soon as they're released.
Traditionally the first episode of Telltale's games have gone free but not till well after release of the whole season. Perhaps this is a good way to remind people that The Wolf Among Us was even out! After all, the first episode came out in October and we haven't heard anything about the second episode yet, and The Walking Dead Season 2 just started up and got a whole lot more press attention even though, in this author's opinion, it's the lesser of the two.
