After Double Fine made a ton of money with their Kickstarter Adventure Game many other classic game developers followed suit, some more profitably than most. Tex Murphy made almost 600k from 7,000 backers (full disclosure- this author was one) last June with their "Project Fedora" campaign, raising the money for what would eventually come to be known as Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure.
Now if you're not familiar with the Tex Murphy series, you're missing out, and should definitely pick them up ASAP. (They're all available on GOG.com, if you need great versions of them that work with current systems.) Full of cheesy full-motion video (FMV) scenes, fun puzzles and a great futuristic detective style, they're some of the finest adventure games ever made. Tex Murphy is played by Chris Jones, who is also the designer of the game, and he's back in his familiar fedora and getting up to his old tricks. Not bad considering the last installment was Tex Murphy: Overseer, which came out in 1998.
If you want more of a history of the character and the games you can check out the recently launched TexMurphy.com, which will give you all of that plus even more trailers and screens for Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure. You can also see what the new environments look like in these in-game screenshots which detail the 3D game world. Never fear though, plenty of familiar FMV is there, with some returning faces from the other installments in the franchise.
The official line-
"Tex Murphy is the last of the hard-boiled gumshoe detectives living in dystopian post-World War III San Francisco in the 2040s. Tex is an honest and good-natured private investigator with a penchant for bourbon, cigarettes and getting himself into trouble.
Tesla Effect is an adventure game with a 3D adventure game seamlessly blended with the renowned Tex Murphy franchise full-motion video (FMV) scenes."
Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure will hit Steam with the help of publisher ATLUS in early 2014. For now, celebrate the 12 Days of Texmas and all the fun things you can expect in the full game.
