"Gotham" season 3 could see the emergence of several highly anticipated villains. The latest rumors and hints from the "Gotham" team indicate that both The Joker and The Riddler could make their long-awaited appearances when the Fox crime series returns in the new year.
Last week, the official "Gotham" Twitter account posted a clip from "Gotham" season 3 in which Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) sidles up to Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) and says: "Think about it, Ed. Your brains, their brawn, my... me..." In the teaser, Barbara appears to be trying to convince Edward to join forces with her. The manipulative psychopath was once Jim Gordon's (Ben McKenzie) fiancee but has since turned into a formidable villain intent on becoming one of the most powerful forces in Gotham's underworld. Barbara herself has been rumored to someday morph into another psychopathic villain: the famous Harley Quinn.
In another Twitter post about "Gotham" season 3, Edward says "I want to destroy him." This post came with the caption "180 degree turnaround." While it remains unclear whether or not Barbara and Edward will become the next big villainous duo, it seems like Edward's transformation into The Riddler is imminent. With Edward fuming over the person he wants to destroy and the ominous "turnaround" tease, it looks like "Gotham" fans will finally see his supervillain persona in "Gotham" season 3.
Meanwhile, a trailer unveiled after the midseason finale of "Gotham" season 3 revealed that Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) is about to make a comeback. While it is unclear how the character, who appeared to have been killed by Theo Galavan (James Frain) in season 2, will re-emerge, his upcoming resurrection has been taken by fans to mean that The Joker will soon appear.
However, "Gotham" executive producer Ken Woodruff has previously explained that while Jerome will be back this season, The Joker won't be introduced until season 4. In the second half of "Gotham" season 3, the series will instead focus on "the mythology of The Joker." "We are absolutely planning in season 3 -- but primarily in the mid to second half of season 3 -- to delve back into the mythology of The Joker, and characters that may or may not be The Joker -- but more likely characters that are an amalgamation of what we'll come to know as The Joker," Woodruff told TV Guide earlier this year.
"Gotham" season 3 continues in January 2017 on Fox. The official return date has not been announced. In the meantime, stay tuned to GameNGuide for the latest "Gotham" news.
