The winter finale episode of "Timeless" came hilariously as a shock to everyone, although the episode is already self-explanatory: "The Capture of Benedict Arnold." Perhaps, what made the finale episode surprising was when they found out that Arnold was one of the pillars of the mysterious Rittenhouse. Now, everyone questioned themselves about whether they indeed, fought for the right side.
Episode 10 also answered the question left in episode 9: the content of the scroll stolen by Flynn from museum. Benedict Arnold wrote the scroll. This was also the point where we learned that Arnold is one of the founding members of Rittenhouse. It is not quite a surprise, however, that such revelation caused gasps from viewers. But that is how "Timeless" ended its mid-season.
Just to get rid of Arnold Benedict, Rufus, Wyatt and Flynn were inclined to make a deal with the devil. They wanted a win-win situation but the mission was not simple.
"You help me get Benedict Arnold," said Flynn, "No more Rittenhouse, no more chasing me through time; your wife's killer found," he continued. And so the trio ended at some camp in Great Britain, where Flynn's shooting spree freaked out Arnold, who revealed that behind the organization of Rittenhouse was a man named David.
It was made to appear that by killing the founder of Rittenhouse, the organization would simply vanish. Of course, this is unlikely with secret societies. As the trio travelled back in time to American Revolution in episode 10 of "Timeless," we had a glimpse, through his son, of what David Rittenhouse was like as a father.
The old Rittenhouse taught his son John that peasants are likened to the hands of a clock: they go round and round and incapable of selecting their path. The paths they chose are decided for them by the clockmaker.
As they were already in the past, a fight ensued and from it, David Rittenhouse was killed by Flynn. But John managed to escape. Lucy used her body to shield the boy, whom Flynn also wanted. Needless to say, notwithstanding the death of David, the organization lived on. His son would doubtless, continue the legacy his father left.
