With the recent release of the new "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" trailer, avid fans were given a quick glimpse at the cute baby Groot. However, latest spoiler news revealed that the initial script for the sequel originally featured an adult Groot, according to James Gunn.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" was a huge hit when it was released in 2014. With the unique chemistry between characters Star-Lord Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voice actor Bradley Cooper) and Groot (voice actor Vin Diesel), many fans clamored for another installment of the Marvel film.
One of the fan favorites was Groot who appears docile but can defeat many opponents with his vine-like appendages. Moviegoers even witnessed his rebirth from a giant into a twig-like baby at the end of the first film.
In "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," filmmaker Gunn's initial script featured a storyline set several years after the events of the first movie. He revealed in a recent Facebook post how he already ironed out the main plot yet was something missing in the script. The group dynamics between the core characters lacked depth and an adult Groot "just wasn't working."
Gunn recounted how he came up with a baby Groot and rehashed the script to revise the timeline. With the revised version of the tree-like giant, Rocket and other members of the Star Lord's team can contribute to baby Groot's development as he grows up from being a child to an adult.
The "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" director also shared that he created baby Groot not as a marketing ploy but to further drive the development of core characters. However, he admitted that baby Groot's addition will bring a positive impact to the sequel's merchandising materials.
Gunn stated, "I'm not an idiot. I knew if Baby Groot worked, the world would want Baby Groot toys and figures and plushies. But ... it most definitely was not the driving force of the decision."
Meanwhile, the filmmaker recently gushed over the soundtrack for the upcoming Marvel film. In an interview with Super Interssante, as cited by Comic Book, Gunn stated that the sequel's soundtrack contains a diverse mix of tunes from famous tracks to songs that some people may not have heard of.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will hit movie theaters on May 5, 2017. Watch the trailer below:
