After being set back from a 2016 release, "Attack on Titan" season 2 is finally coming to Japan in April 2017. With this revelation, it was announced by FUNimation Entertainment Thursday that it has secured the license to bring the anime's sophomore season to the United States and Canada.
Since FUNimation brought the first season of "Attack on Titan" to North America by streaming its 25 episodes simultaneously as the airing in Japan, it is expected that the upcoming season will be brought in the same way. Fans have waited long enough for the sequel, too long that, in the time it took to finally confirm a release date, FUNimation had already released the first season on home video (2014), and two compilation anime movies have already been spawned from the first run (in 2014 and 2015).
And that does not even begin to cover what the original manga by Hajime Isayama has also spawned: a bunch of manga spinoffs, a TV series, a two-part film, and much more besides. "Attack on Titan" has attracted a following that has gone beyond the shores of Japan into the West. And by the sense of expectation in North America for the new season, it is clear that the interest in the anime has not flagged or dwindled despite the protracted wait.
It may be an understatement to say that fans are eager for any detail on the next installment of "Attack on Titan" that can get them through at least four months of waiting. There has been a suggestion that the setting of the anime may shift from the walled city that protected humans from the man-flesh-loving giants to the countryside. Other theories have it that the new season may depart from the original manga storyline where a few heroes labor to keep humankind safe from overgrown monsters.
As for the production end of the series, most of the people involved in the production of the first season will be back for the upcoming "Attack on Titan" season 2. There will be a new director though as the last one will be taking on another role in the making of the sequel.
It is possible that details may become more concrete as the premiere of "Attack on Titan" season 2 nears its release next year. Until then, it may be enough to be comforted by the thought that, indeed, a new season of the anime is on its way.
