J.A. Bayona gives a few hints on what the sequel to Jurassic World will be like in an interview with Max Every from ComingSoon.
Bayona says Jurassic World 2 is still going to be an epic adventure film, but also hints that it will also take a darker turn with a dose of political subtext reflected in it. "I think it's very interesting where the new movie is heading. It's so different from the other films, it talks a lot about the moment we live in right now. It's darker... but at the same time it's going to be a lot of fun. It's a blockbuster, you have Chris Pratt, it's a great adventure, but it's very interesting the way the film is darker than the other ones."
J.A. Bayona is also the director of A Monster Calls, a fantasy gothic fable and the Spanish horror film The Orphanage. He will direct the upcoming sequel Jurassic World 2 from the script written by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. The cast includes Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas-Howard, Toby Jones, Justice Smith and Rafe Spall. The movie will be produced by Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall.
But the director also reassures fans that while the sequel is going to take the Jurassic Park franchise in a new direction, it will still be respectful of the things and elements that made the original a blockbuster hit. Bayona explains that "Jurassic is going to be very different from A Monster Calls or The Orphanage, but they called me because they loved The Orphanage and The Impossible and they wanted me to be leading the new Jurassic. I think you're going to find some stuff that will remind you of my movies. At the same time I'm very aware that this is Steven's baby and I'm going to take care of his baby as much as possible, knowing where I am all the time."
Production of Jurassic World 2 is scheduled to begin on March 2017 and the movie is set to be released on June 22, 2018.
