Square Enix may have witnessed success and popularity with the release of the critically acclaimed reboot of Tomb Raider, but that doesn’t mean that the company is resting on its laurels. Square Enix is now planning to add a second chapter to Lara’s story with the sequel for the game said to be the next chapter of Lara’s development.
Speaking recently at the Bradford Animation Festival, Senior Art Director at Crystal Dynamics, Brian Horton, talked about this year’s Tomb Raider reboot, while also fielding a few questions related to a highly anticipated sequel to the game.
“We’ve announced the sequel… I’m glad I can finally talk about!” Stated Horton. “The Tomb Raider sequel is the next chapter of [Lara’s] development… her life is changing. She can’t go back to the way she was.”
Horton also talked about the team at Crystal Dynamics which worked hard to create “techniques and tools that would exist beyond a single videogame, notably stating the development of TressFX with AMD,” Electronic Theatre reported.
Horton stated that TressFX was still being worked on and that it was most positively a ‘next-gen’ technology. And when pressed about the budget for the sequel to the game, a seemingly uncomfortable Horton stated:
“We don’t talk about our budgets… it’s a well financed game,” stated Horton before admitting: “We’re not spending any more on a sequel than on the original game.”
While we are still awaiting any real information related to the sequel for the game, JunkieMonkeys discovered that Square Enix has trademarked an unannounced game titled Lara Croft: Reflections in both the United States and Europe, with the classification for the game tagging Reflections as, "Computer game software; computer games, consisting of computer software; video game software; video games, consisting of computer software."
However, before a trademark for Reflections was even up, IGN reported that the Tomb Raider reveal for next generation was likely to happening at VGX.
On a similar note, it was also revealed that the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition was listed for PS4 by Amazon Italy before it was pulled down. On this matter, Square Enix sent over the same statement to DualShockers as it did for IGN: “It’s so hard to keep a secret these days! We appreciate all of the enthusiasm, however we don’t have any details to share just yet. That said, we highly recommend you keep an eye on any major gaming events happening in early December."
Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix’s Tomb Raider saw a March 2013 worldwide release for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
