With the recently released Christmas Special trailer for "Doctor Who," it seems that Christmas is going to be the most wonderful time of the year not only for everyone who would want to receive presents but also for the die-hard fans of the classic science fiction series. Fans can't wait long to watch the return of "Doctor Who" and his gang.
It has been almost a whole year since the full-blown "Doctor Who" episode was seen on actual TV screens. The BBC released the first trailer for the special entitled "The Return of Doctor Mysterio". The three-minute trailer, featuring the Doctor's (Peter Capaldi) return to New York City, revealed brains in jars, a high-security research facility and some rather intriguing new morsels of information.
Together with his old friend, an investigative reporter Nardole (Matt Lucas), and a superhero known as the Ghost (Justin Chatwin), the Doctor will save Manhattan by taking on brain-swapping aliens and their Earth-orbiting ship. This year's "Doctor Who" special is said take on several plots at once.
This year's episode is also a continuation of last year's "Doctor Who" special with the Doctor and Nardole teaming up and landing in New York City for the holiday season. Little is known about these brain-swapping aliens that have been promised, but they're certainly creepy. They're pale and veiny, and their faces are half-hidden behind surgical masks.
The official plot of "Doctor Who" Christmas special promises a big unveiling for the Ghost's true identity. One theory was that there was a sinister capital 'I' hiding behind the 'G' on his chest and this might refer to the Great Intelligence. If that's the case, Doctor Who might be dealing with his old enemy.
Meanwhile, this year's "Doctor Who Christmas" special titled "The Return of Doctor Mysterio," was written by departing showrunner Steven Moffat. According to TV Guide, producer Chris Chibnall (Broadchurch) will replace Moffat after the upcoming Season 10, which is expected to air in Spring 2017.
Catch "Doctor Who" Christmas special on Christmas Day at 9/8c on BBC America. Also, enjoy a limited run in theaters from Dec. 27-29.
