With the next-generation of consoles about halfway here, early reviews of some of the various launch titles haven't been as impressive as some were hoping for, but the games are still earning acclaim for being visually stunning, thanks to the tech that the PS4 and Xbox One have to offer. Now, it's up to the later games to try and pick up the slack. One such title is Techland's Dying Light, a sort of free-running survival horror mash up with elements of weapon customization thanks to a crafting system. The best description is a mash-up between Mirror's Edge and Techland's own Dead Island series. With day and night playing an intrinsic part of the game, Techland has released a new trailer to show the game's lighting system in action.
As a press release describes, "Techland harnessed the added power to develop a physically based lighting system using its in-house Chrome Engine 6. This allows them to not only create realistic lighting and shadows in the game world but more importantly make the game world more authentic and immersive." Even if the techy stuff doesn't grab your attention, the trailer also shows the first look at a new location in the game, Old Town, which is "completely different from everything that has been shown from Dying Light before."

We haven't heard much else about Dying Light, save for the game's basic description: "At night, the hunter becomes the hunted, as the infected become aggressive and more dangerous. Most frightening are the predators which appear only after sundown. Players must use everything in their power to survive until the morning's first light."
Apart from that, we know that the game is a 4 player co-op action survival game set in an open world. Hopefully, it will be a lot more satisfying than Techland's last zombie title, Dead Island: Riptide. Apart from a small scandal over the game's zombie bait edition, Riptide earned less than favorable scores. A follow-up to the first Dead Island, Riptide was more of an expansion than an actual sequel. However, it could be said that Riptide was just the trial by fire to show Techland exactly what not to do for its next zombie title. As such, while it's still early, Dying Light shows promise. Keep your eyes peeled for more on this one.
An exact release date has yet to be given. Dying Light is a cross-generational title, set to hit PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC, sometime in 2014.
