In episode 9 season one of "Designated Survivor," Hannah Wells found proof that would pin down McLeish, but met a car accident on her way to the Congress. A simulated bombing of Capitol revealed a traitor in the White House.
At the core of episode 9 of the first season of "Designated Survivor" is a strategy in politics that a politician must learn to master, in order to reach a goal. In this case, President Thomas Kirkman needed the support of a particular senator, but has to play a game for it.
Episode 9 began with security breach carried out by Gabriel Thompson, a system analyst working for the NSA. His objective was to release the breached information through wikileaks, of members of the previous President's cabinet that includes Kirkman.
The whistleblower has on his possession some old memo that Emily sent to insult Senator Hazelton's nasty habit of groping women. Of course, Hazelton only demanded for Emily's dismissal. The government was able to get information about Thompson's whereabouts, but cannot make any move about it. Thompson sought asylum at Venezuelan embassy.
To make the situation favorable to Kirkman, he only needed to use some honesty by presenting to Hazelton evidence of his revolting attitude. He was given then an ultimatum: either to retire or he would be incriminated by releasing the documents. Hazelton obliged.
Thompson and Kirkman finally met and it turned out that Thompson was supportive of Kirkman, and his actions were not to threaten the president, but to protect him. So Thompson gave Kirkman some files, including a computer-simulated bombing of the Capitol, created some time before the actual bombing.
"There's a traitor among us," Kirkman said, taking off his glasses. Meanwhile, Hannah Wells, portrayed by Maggie Q, had a chat with Internal Affairs director persuading him about Jason Atwood, but to no avail. She had to find a link, a proof. And she did: a photo of MacLeish and Catalan together.
Wells continued with her probe until she found one that would hit bull's eye: MacLeish was no war hero, but a war felon. He attacked many Afghani villages, resulting to hundreds of casualties. Wells told Kimble Hookstraten (Virginia Madsen) she has proof to take down MacLeish.
As Hookstraten worked on putting a congressional-committee meeting, Wells drove towards Congress. En route, her car crashed by a huge van. The 10th episode of "Designated Survivor" airs on December 14, 2016.
