The first trailers for the highly anticipated "Spider-Man: Homecoming" were unveiled this week and they reveal some pretty amazing details about the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. Fans of the iconic web-slinger have been eagerly awaiting the release of "Homecoming" since Tom Holland made his debut as Spider-Man/Peter Parker in this year's "Captain America: Civil War."
Starring Holland as the teenaged Parker from the Marvel comics, the action-packed new trailers show Spider-Man taking on common criminals and powerful villains alike. They also reveal that fans will see more of the mentor-mentee relationship between Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Spider-Man, as well as the two superheroes possibly joining forces to fight the bad guys. Aside from that, here are five of the most awesome things from the U.S. and the international trailers for "Spider-Man: Homecoming."
The Avengers as street criminals. In one of the first scenes in the official U.S. trailer for "Spider-Man: Homecoming," Spidey takes on a gang of robbers wearing Avengers masks. "Wait a minute, you guys aren't the real Avengers," he says. "I can tell; Hulk gives it away." The scene is a clever nod to the actual Avengers, who Spider-Man fought with and against in "Civil War."
Spidey as a flying squirrel. In another scene, the teenaged hero does a back flip over a police helicopter from the top of the Washington Monument. As he does so, viewers see a pair of translucent wings unfolding from his suit. The web wings may be one of Stark's upgrades to Spider-Man's original costume (which fans saw in "Civil War") and enable him to "fly" in "Spider-Man: Homecoming."
Zendaya as the anti-Mary Jane. Zendaya has previously confirmed that her character, Michelle, is not Spidey's love interest in "Spider-Man: Homecoming," and, true enough, Parker and his best buddy, Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), seem totally besotted with a different classmate, Liz Allan (Laura Harrier). Still, it remains to be seen whether Liz is just a foil for Michelle, who could be revealed to be Spider-Man's true love by the end of the film.
Michael Keaton as The Vulture. Aside from The Vulture, the trailers reveal possible minor villains in "Spider-Man: Homecoming." Logan Marshall-Green and Bookem Woodbine both use an energy-emitting weapon and wear yellow shirts, suggesting that the two could be playing different incarnations of Shocker, a Marvel villain.
Spidey and Iron Man as crime-fighting buddies. In a scene that definitely sent shivers down fans' spines, the U.S. trailer for "Spider-Man: Homecoming" ended with Spidey swinging between buildings with a suited-up Iron Man flying close behind, suggesting that the two are on their way to kick a villain's behind.
"Spider-Man: Homecoming" hits cinemas July 7, 2017.
