The hit CBS comedy series "The Big Bang Theory" is nearing the mid-point of its Season 10 run, however, the show's Season 11 extension remains unclear. Latest speculations indicated that the show might face a potential cancellation given the core cast members' million dollar contracts, as well as their interest in other projects.
"The Big Bang Theory" Season 10 is on a quick break with the upcoming episode 11 set to air in mid-December. Despite the looming expiration of the core cast's contracts, CBS and Warner Bros. have yet to announce their future plans for the hit comedy series.
Speculations are rife that "The Big Bang Theory" Season 11 extension may not happen. Several issues are said to affect the CBS show's future such as potential failed negotiations with the cast, schedule conflicts due to other projects, the growing cost of production, as well as the high salaries of cast members Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar.
All five celebrities are paid $1 million per episode, including a percentage of the CBS comedy series' back-end profits. With the impending end of their contracts for "The Big Bang Theory," the five cast members may potentially negotiate for a higher salary or a higher cut of back-end profits.
CBS and Warner Bros. will still be able to afford the cast's higher salaries given "The Big Bang Theory's" hit status. However, the time may come when production and ad costs along with the cast's lucrative contracts may prove to be too costly to manage, according to TVGuide. Showrunners will need to find a way to balance all the costs to keep the show profitable for both its cast, the studio and the network.
Apart from money matters, "The Big Bang Theory" Season 11 might not get greenlit if the core cast members are no longer interested in reprising their roles. Moreover, given their involvement in other projects, potential scheduling conflicts may prevent them from rejoining the CBS series.
Parsons already has a full plate following his involvement in various productions, either as a cast member or a producer. He is already set to produce the spin-off show that features a younger Sheldon, the upcoming comedy "Lakeside VA" and more.
Meanwhile, Parsons previously conveyed his interest to sign-up for "The Big Bang Theory" Season 11. In an earlier interview with TVLine, he commented that he and his fellow cast members are open to reprising their roles for another season run.
"The Big Bang Theory" Season 10 episode 11 will air on Dec. 15 on CBS. Watch the trailer below:
