PlayStation 4 News & Update: Xbox One; Best Selling Console In US Since July

The NPD Group's monthly sales claimed that the PS4 topped Xbox One sales in the US during November.

A Sony spokesperson confirmed the news with GameSpot. As has been the case for the second half of the year, however, the company declined to offer any additional comment on the report.

Since July, "Xbox One" had been the top-selling console in the US, breaking a long streak of PS4 coming out on top. Even prior to Sony's comment, Microsoft all but confirmed that wasn't the case during November in a statement today.

It also comes a surprise given the news that two new Xbox systems are on the way, one of which, the Xbox One S, which launched last August. This could have depressed sales of the standard Xbox One, but it appears that may not have been the case perhaps due to some nice sales that took place.

"We have seen strong momentum for Xbox One since announcing the new Xbox One S at E3 in June. That momentum continued in November as gaming consoles were once again among the most sought-after products to buy over Black Friday weekend. In addition, we saw record engagement among Xbox One owners on Xbox Live as fans enjoyed new games and great deals. In fact the total players online last Sunday, were up 40 percent compared to last year," as stated by Xbox marketing VP Mike Nichols.

It was a remarkable month for Sony, as it launched the new, more powerful PlayStation 4 Pro. The slim PS4 revision launched in September, followed by PlayStation VR last October, but none of them was enough to surpass PS4 sales past Xbox One's in the US.

This coming December 11, the discounted Xbox One will bring the cheapest models down to $250. This was expected after Sony announced a temporary $50 price cut on the PS4.
