Fans continue to wait for "How to Train Your Dragon 3" to return to the big screens but there are now speculations that the movie has been canceled. Initially scheduled to be a 2017 release, the third installment had been moved to 2018 and now, further back to 2019.
Hollywood Reporter announced Universal's decision to move "How to Train Your Dragon 3" to the 2019 slot, which means that fans will have to wait that long to see Toothless back in action with Hiccup. The 2019 delay also means that the third installment will go head-to-head with Brie Larson's "Captain Marvel."
According to Screenrant, the new release date of "How to Train Your Dragon 3" is a result of Comcast's development schedule. The broadcasting and cable television company acquired the movie's production company, Dreamworks Animation, for $3.8 billion, and as a result, the release dates continue to change. The plan is to have Dreamworks Animation release two movies in a year and 2017 and 2018 schedules have already been filled.
With "How to Train Your Dragon 3" release date being pushed back a couple of times, speculations about its cancellation started to emerge. However, fans can rest assured that the movie is on its way. Having a 2019 release date only means that director Dean DeBlois will have all the time he needs to make sure that the movie won't be rushed.
Also, CinemaBlend reported that the 2019 release of "How To Train Your Dragon 3" isn't such a bad thing since it will give DeBlois some room to make sure that the third movie will fit the trilogy. Although there have been talks of a fourth installment, "How To Train Your Dragon 3" was originally planned to be the endgame.
Fans can just look forward to "How to Train Your Dragon 3" on March 1, 2019. It won't be surprising if a decision would be made to push the date further back once again.
